Responsibilities

  • Completes a broad variety of administrative tasks

      Title: Energy Storage Market Lead

      Energy Storage Market Lead

      The Energy Storage Market Lead will lead White Pine’s energy storage investment and development activities, including project origination, analysis, and execution. This will be a critical addition to our team with significant responsibilities and room for growth and will direct report to the President of the company.

      Responsibilities

      • Develop strategy to build and execute on an aggressive energy storage sales pipeline comprised primarily of community choice aggregators, commercial and industrial customers, electric cooperatives and municipal utilities
      • Identify, lead and drive project opportunities to assist in growing our portfolio of renewable assets, including solar + storage and standalone storage solutions in front of and behind the meter at commercial and industrial project sites
      • Develop corporate strategy to grow White Pine’s energy storage market share as an owner-operator through familiarity with processes, incentives, and ancillary revenue streams of wholesale market participation
      • Evaluate pro-forma models to determine business feasibility for battery storage opportunities. Make recommendations for go / no-go decisions
      • Participate in regulatory and policy discussions through industry associations, CPUC hearings, and state level programs as well as keeping track of utility and federal incentives
      • Source, manage and interact with designated market participants for the operation of new assets added to the portfolio
      • Gather and analyze project information, including utility rates and ISO services; utility data and existing building and site information for existing facilities that may host BESS; potential utility company, federal, state, and local subsidies such as rebates, grants, and other market incentives
      • Understand and recommend BESS manufacturers, track technology advancements with associated costs and work closely with other internal members including engineering, policy, development and construction teams

      Business Development

      • Expand White Pine’s energy storage investment pipeline, including standalone and PV+S pipeline across new markets
      • Management of energy storage acquisition strategy, execution, and project valuation assumptions
      • Apply understanding of energy, capacity, and ancillary services markets, and RTO/ISO market structures to daily functions
      • Analyze value proposition and deal structures for complex storage projects, including resiliency, DC Coupled storage and front of the meter connected storage in the northeast
      • Foster relationships with battery manufacturers, integrators, and control system providers to facilitate cost-effective execution of projects
      • Project Evaluation
      • Apply technical knowledge of energy storage to off-taker and energy market values to structure and optimize energy storage investments
      • Build models and analysis to aid internal approval process and external investment activities
      • Evaluate storage technology, procurement, and installation options

      Energy Storage Modeling:

      • Work collaboratively with White Pine’s energy analytics team to develop and maintain energy storage models using MS Excel, Tyba, Python, or other relevant software tools (e.g., HOMER)
      • Using modeling results, review and scrutinize underlying performance of energy storage projected in financial model
      • Apply energy storage knowledge and experience to interpret repowering/ refurbishment strategies designed to avoid capacity degradation, including duty cycles, state of charge, discharge rate and other major and minor design attributes
      • Review electrical designs of standalone and integrated storage projects for model input purposes
      • Review performance test data to verify satisfaction of contractual obligations

      Negotiation & Close

      • Participate in the negotiation and closing of storage project acquisitions or investments
      • Working with White Pine’s legal and finance teams, define project investment terms
      • Monitor installation and operation of acquired storage projects, to ensure successful outcomes

      Requirements

      • At least 3 years experience with energy storage project development
      • At least 2 years working with solar + storage projects with projects over 1MW
      • Understanding of distributed energy market dynamics, including emerging incentive programs, local tariff structures and CAISO rules and procedures governing participation of distributed energy resources
      • Experience with energy storage modeling software applications such as Python, HOMER or in-house developed applications
      • Business development experience including: identifying new customers, creating value propositions, and negotiating & executing revenue contracts
      • Driven, self-starter with a passion for excellence

        Senior Project Developer

        The Senior Project Developer will have responsibility for filing interconnection applications and managing the utility process, all aspects of managing the permitting and entitlement process of solar PV and battery projects up to the start of construction, as well as supporting the pursuit and execution of revenue contracts. The successful candidate will be a self-starter, and responsible and accountable for all aspect of the projects development.

        Job Duties & Responsibilities

        Bring projects from conception to completion on schedule including: 

        • Ownership of a project development plan utilizing Smartsheet or equivalent project management software to establish itemized tasks, budgets, timelines, and schedule dependencies, from site acquisition through NTP construction
        • Site analysis and site selection, in partnership with GIS Team and real estate brokers as applicable
        • Landowner outreach and contract negotiation culminating in executed lease, license, or purchase agreements
        • Interconnection – progress projects through the interconnection study process, in partnership with the company’s engineering consultants
        • Real estate entitlement including but not limited to managing ALTA survey process and working with title companies as well as lot line adjustments and parcel mergers
        • Discretionary permitting including land use and zoning (typically Conditional Use Permit / Special Use Permit) via county planning and zoning authorities, as well as any state or federal permits as may be necessary
        • Tax – Negotiation of personal property tax abatements or PILOT agreements with county officials
        • Coordination of third-party engineering and environmental consultants to obtain required studies and surveys in support of real estate title and discretionary permit applications
        • Partnership with White Pine’s preferred engineering firms for the provision of preliminary layouts and production forecasts
        • Maintaining a strong understanding of the regulatory and policy environments for assigned market(s)

          Required Qualifications

          • 2+ years of hands-on renewable energy development experience
          • Ability to analyze and synthesize multiple data points in order to make decisions on key aspects of development and commercial strategy
          • Competency in scheduling and budgeting for development-stage renewable energy projects and ongoing commitment to manage toward achieving schedule and budget goals.

          Vice President of Development

          The Vice President of Development will oversee all project development at White Pine Renewables and will report directly to the CEO. The successful candidate will be accountable for all project development at White Pine, will have an opportunity to hire, will manage a small team, and when necessary, will personally manage White Pine’s most important projects. The successful candidate will be a self-starter, know solar and storage project development inside and out, and be able to inspire and motivate their team to do great work while having fun.

          Job Duties & Responsibilities
